CELEBRATING JUNE 12: A CALL TO STRENGTHEN NIGERIA’S DEMOCRACY

Ambassador Engr. Dr. David Olusegun Okanlawon, Chairman of the Olusegun Okanlawon Foundation, has congratulated all Nigerians on 26 years of uninterrupted civilian rule, marking a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey. According to Adedokun Sunday Harshasha, media aide to Engr. Okanlawon, the statement was issued to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day.

Today, we celebrate the resilience and commitment of the Nigerian people to democracy. June 12 is a pivotal date in Nigeria’s history, representing the nation’s struggle for democratic governance and the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists. Engr. Okanlawon paid tribute to the courageous individuals who fought for Nigeria’s democracy, particularly the hero of the struggle, Chief MKO Abiola.

As Nigeria commemorates this year’s Democracy Day, Engr. Okanlawon reflected on the country’s progress and acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead. Our democracy has come a long way, but there is still work to be done to strengthen our institutions, promote transparency, and ensure accountability.

The statement urged all Nigerians to recommit to the democratic ideals that have brought the country this far. Engr. Okanlawon also acknowledged the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, wishing him success and more strength as he continues to lead the nation towards a brighter future.
